at 45th Annual Watts/Willowbrook Christmas Parade Dec. 4th
Childhood dreamer and one of the oldest living Pullman Porter, Watts resident and centenarian Lee Gibson will serve as the Grand Marshall for the 45th annual Watts/Willowbrook Christmas Parade on Saturday December 4th beginning at 12-noon at Earvin “Magic” Johnson Park.
Gibson, who was born in Louisiana and as a child lived by the train tracks where he would wait for the train to go by and hear the whistle blow, worked for Union Pacific for 38 years as a Pullman Porter and it was that opportunity that brought him to his Southern California destination in the 1930s.
The parade was founded in 1965 by community leader Edna Aliewine to fill was she recognized as a void during her childhood.
“When my father took me to Christmas parades it was always outside the community and rarely, if ever did it include people of color,” said Aliewine.
Now, nearly a half century later it has become one of the proud staples of the Watts/Willowbrook community annually attracting 35,000 people who represent families of the Watts/Willowbrook communities and neighboring cities.
The parade will kick-off at 10a.m. with a live gospel concert that will also feature a special R&B attraction Young Maestro.
Marching bands and drill teams representing, Jordan high School, Walton Middle School, Gompers Middle School, Locke High School, Willowbrook Middle School, Verbum Die High School, St. Mary’s High School, Bunche Middle School, South Gate High School, Huntington Park High School, Warren Lane Middle School and many other will be among the participants of the parade.
The parade route will begin at El Segundo and Clovis and travel north onto Central Ave. and 103rd Street and east on 103rd Street to Grandee. Another set of live performances will follow the conclusion of the parade at the Ted Watkins Gymnasium.

There will be a conference, a hair and fashion show and several speakers. Meet with other local women who choose to wear their hair natural. Gather to commune and support one another in your quest for chemical free hair! Discuss hair care, maintenance, products and services. We are here to connect people of color, to support and empower. Our goal is to help build community, nurture spirits, and create connections that will lead you to a more conscious and fulfilled lifestyle.

The Wooli Me Expo is to provide natural products for the hair and skin. Wooli Me is a wake up call to being Naturally Beautiful; It’s a call to be at peace with God’s gift (young natural hair), and bring an end to the unhealthy drama.

It’s a new time now….. our history of chemical relaxers and heat styling are no longer needed. It’s time for us as Black Women to redefine and promote our own beauty standards. It’s time to take off the wigs, weaves, perms and scarfs and liberate our lifestyle.
